The project reimagined the space between these two worlds, past and present, by transforming the central lawn, framed by eight majestic heritage trees, into a living light installation that stirs both the senses and the soul. The design vision for The True Vines was to bring life to the trees without overwhelming their natural elegance. The lighting flows with the rhythm of nature, subtly transitioning from dusk to night. Carefully programmed LED strips trace upward from the roots to the branches, emulating the flow of veins, creating the illusion that the trees themselves are alive with glowing energy. This bio-inspired movement echoes the pulse of life, serenity, and quiet strength. Rather than imposing an artificial spotlight, the luminaires blend into the tree’s bodice and silhouette, illuminating their forms gently. The concept captures the idea that the lighting is not merely shining on the trees, but rising with them. With color transitions that mirror the moods of sunset and nightfall, the entire courtyard becomes a soft canvas of harmony between people, place, and nature. To enhance the immersive experience, the lighting is programmed to react to ambient music. Creating Drama with Shadows and Light Illuminating Asia Singapore is proud to celebrate its Silver Award win in the Interior Design – Lighting category at the prestigious London Design Awards 2024. The accolade recognizes the team’s artistic lighting concept for the Singapore Repertory Theatre / Singapore Theatre Company, where light becomes an essential actor in setting the stage, even before the performance begins. This award-winning project reimagines the main holding area of an indoor arts theatre with a lighting scheme that is at once dramatic, elegant, and warm. Tasked to match the grandeur of the refreshed luxury interior design, the lighting design carefully accentuates modern minimalist elements while embracing the rich architectural and emotional tone of the space. “Where emotion meets architecture, through light.” As the venue is housed in a conservation building, Illuminating Asia faced numerous structural constraints. With no opportunity for a physical mock-up, the team relied on deep lighting expertise and virtual simulations in close collaboration with multiple manufacturers. These remote trials allowed the team to predict performance outcomes with remarkable accuracy, guiding decisions on luminaire type, positioning, and light distribution. The resulting design uses a blend of linear downlights and wall washers to create dimensionality and rhythm throughout the interior. A 3000K warm white palette harmonises with the venue’s dominant tones, rich reds and bronzes, enhancing intimacy and flow. Carefully layered lighting levels help craft visual narratives that invite patrons to connect, linger, and converse in a refined yet emotionally resonant setting. The project also showcases a sustainable and intelligent lighting solution. All luminaires feature high efficacy, dimmable outputs, and Bluetooth-enabled smart drivers. Through wireless controls, scenes were configured rapidly, within just 12 hours, collaboratively with various stakeholders. Additionally, energy efficiency was ensured by programming low-brightness settings during off-peak hours, balancing aesthetic impact with environmental responsibility. Commissioned by the Singapore Tourism Board, this national project set out to revive the spirit of Haw Par Villa, a site rich in oriental sculptures, folklore, and mythology, by reintroducing it to modern audiences through immersive lighting storytelling. Originally built by the Tiger Balm family in the 1930s, Haw Par Villa had seen declining footfall in recent decades. Winning the design proposal, Illuminating Asia embarked on a mission to preserve the park’s heritage while using modern lighting technology to spark renewed curiosity. At the heart of the design is a unique blend of traditional landscape lighting knowledge and contemporary projection mapping techniques. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a captivating moving light show, drawing them into a multisensory journey. As they explore the grounds, a thoughtfully curated lighting path highlights key sculptures, each illuminated to tell its own timeless story. The project posed a significant technical challenge: no physical alteration was permitted on any heritage structure. To overcome this, Illuminating Asia custom-engineered mechanical mounts and optical lenses, allowing for precise lighting placements without damage.
